Castor Oil Processing

Castor oil is viscous, pale yellow and non-drying oil with a bland taste and it is sometimes used as purgative. There are an astonishing number of industrial applications for castor oil and its derivatives, and new ones are continually being discovered. Castor oil ranks high in importance among the vegetable oils that are used industrially. Castor oil is used either in its crude form, or in the refined hydrogenated form. Castor oil is widely used as a raw material for paints, coatings, inks, lubricants and a wide variety of other products.
The processing of castor oil from castor oil plant seeds is done in a similar way to most of other oilseeds. The ripe castor seeds are allowed to dry before being split open to discharge the seeds. The seeds are cleaned, cooked and dried prior to extraction. Cooking is done to coagulate protein, and to press the oil efficiently.

castor-oilPressing comes after the castor seeds are well-prepared. The pressing process adopts a high pressure continuous screw oil press called the oil expeller. Then, the extracted oil is filtered, and the material removed from the oil is fed back to the stream with fresh materials. The oil cake is finally discharged from the oil press, containing 10% oil. Then the oil cake is subjected to solvent extraction with hexane or heptanes. The oil is essentially a pure triglyceride, and contains almost 90% glyceryl tricinoleate. It is the ricinoleic triglyceride that is needed to produce high quality castor oil.
